This is a bipolar reflection nebula, where gas and dust surrounding a star are shining by reflected light. The gas and dust in the nebula have been ejected by the star in two polar jets, moving in opposite directions, a process known as bipolar outflow. Just weeks after NASA astronauts repaired the Hubble Space Telescope in December 1999, the Hubble Heritage Project snapped this picture of NGC 1999, a nebula in the constellation Orion. The Heritage astronomers, in collaboration with scientists in Texas and Ireland, used Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) to obtain this colour image. The Hubble Space Telescope has caught the eerie, wispy tendrils of a dark interstellar cloud being destroyed by the passage of one of the brightest stars in the Pleiades star cluster. Like a flashlight beam shining off the wall of a cave, the star is reflecting light off the surface of pitch black clouds of cold gas laced with dust. These are called reflection nebulae. This Hubble photograph of the Orion Nebula is a great choice for astronomy lovers! This is a photograph of the massive Orion Nebula, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The Orion Nebula is the birthplace of many new stars, and over 3000 stars are present in this image, surrounded by swirling clouds of gas and dust. The colours of the original photo have been enhanced slightly, and include rich oranges, pinks and purples. Credit: ASA, ESA, M. Observing the Orchestra of the Stars - Astronomer/TV presenter, Mark Thompson looks to the skies & points towards the next advancement in space telescopes. Whilst the refracting and reflecting telescopes used by amateurs can see great distances, distortion is caused by peering through the Earth's atmosphere. In contrast, the much larger Hubble space telescope floats above the atmosphere and is able to produce amazing images like Mark's chosen view of the Great Orion Nebula, also known as M42.
